I didn't mean Tomlin didn't have input; I'm not sure why he should have much input there, other than, you know, character-related components.

It's performative on both ends, but my guess is in a much different way for the team (and a much, MUCH different way for the coaches).

For these perpetually downtrodden teams, saying you interviewed a Belichick or a Harbaugh is like the class nerd getting to brag about dancing a slow dance with a really pretty girl (this of course is just a random example that has nothing to do with me).*** Look! I'm a winner! Sort of! Even though it was almost surely just a good faith gesture and you're never going to get to strut through the halls of the high school holding hands and you're never going to be making out in front of her locker, you still get to feel pretty good about yourself and show off to your friends for a few minutes.

For Belichick & Harbaugh, this is, of course, much more cutthroat. These secretive jackasses don't want to tell you what they had for breakfast but suddenly they're OK with teams declaring they've interviewed there? This is their way of letting other, better teams know they're interviewing and they're really seriously no we swear it thinking of going to these shitty spots. Nobody really believes Belichick is going to finish his career coaching a downtrodden, anonymous franchise and Harbaugh is still young enough to stay at Michigan and not risk the rest of his career by coaching a downtrodden, anonymous franchise. But owners are a mostly stupid lot and this will almost surely jolt someone into either making a move witih his head coach or raising his offer to Belichick and/or Harbaugh.

***that girl on our indoor track team was a stunner and I still can't believe she danced "Stairway to Heaven" with me at the Halloween dance junior year, it was 11 minutes of paradise :D

I think I ask this every coaching hire season, but do NFL teams pretty much just limit the interview to the GM, the owner and maybe a couple of corporate note takers? I'd want a couple of people who played in the league in the room, if only to observe and give their thoughts after the interview was over. Trust me - there are discussions being had on NFL Twitter (the level people like Schefter never see) where players are giving their real thoughts to each other. It seems it would be invaluable to have that input.

I'm in no way connected to Michigan outside of knowing a few fans, but why do people believe Harbaugh is going to the NFL?

Is it just the possible sanctions? His ego? It seems he could stay at Michigan the rest of his career, barring a few consecutive losses to the Buckeyes.

because like 4 of the last 5 years he’s interviewed for NFL jobs.

it’s one thing to be on teams’ lists in the rumor mill / clickbait world, it’s another to meet with teams on back to back days

That's what Jerrah wants you to believe and Adam the good lapdog is glad to amplify. Still a prime candidate for a "surprise" firing.

Ever since he pished Johnson out, Jones has a habit of sticking with his coaching choices long past their sell-by dates. Possibly because as a GM (where he's had his moments, especially in the draft), he's past his and sort of knows it.

My opinion is that Jones leaked this because it'd just be too humiliating for him to bring Belichick in as a remedial coach. He and Kraft have a real dick-measuring relationship, cushioned by the fact they also have mutual respect for how each has monetized their respective franchise.

I assume it is something about letting the cook buy the groceries.
