Mack Jones went to the playoffs in his rookie season. He played very well against Buffalo, including a game-winning drive. He still sucks.

You can look for all the good stuff in a situation, but look for the simplest answer.

There are two components to this. One is whether or not Pickett can be their quarterback. It doesn't look good, but I wouldn't write him off yet. The other is whether the coaching staff dropped the ball with him this season. I have no doubt that they did.

I will never understand why teams don't have first-year QBs sit at least one year. I mean, I do...you've got a small window in which he's not making much to try and make a Super Bowl run while loading up around him. But how many guys were ruined b/c they got rushed into a bad spot? Love looked awful in spot duty the last couple years but it all came together after some sustained action this year. Rodgers of course was great after sitting behind Favre. Those guys are obviously the outliers in terms of hold-the-fort-down guys, but if I was just bad enough to get a top QB in the draft, it would seem to be a smart thing to let him sit the first year while some rando takes the beating for a rebuilding team. Steve McNair & Carson Palmer were very good after those approaches...and so were the guys in front of them, Chris Chandler & Jon Kitna.

I just don't think letting some rando taking a beating for a season while the high pick watches is really an option, for a variety of reasons.

Look at Carolina. Reich got canned partway through the season while Bryce Young struggled. Can you imagine the reaction if he had Andy Dalton out there sucking and refused to play Young? Fans would revolt. Young would revolt. Reich would have been fired five games earlier.

And the other rookie QB thrown into action immediately was CJ Stroud. Houston was supposed to be vying for the top pick again. Instead Stroud looks like a future MVP and the team is still alive in the playoffs.

It's one thing to have a young QB sit behind a good, established QB for a year or two, like the Packers have done. It's very different to do it with a mediocre starter.

    It worked for the Chiefs.

I doubt Panthers fans would revolt since the mere fact that there ARE Panthers fans at this point proves they'll put up with anything.

Yeah, but Alex Smith had a great year. There was zero pressure to play Mahomes.
