I am truly amazed that no U.S. newspaper has tried the British Page 3 model.

Christian Red (formerly NYDN) wrote some fantastic pieces, mostly sports related. I found the Messenger only because Christian posted his work on social media. What a shame for him and for all who continue to put their hearts into producing good, quality journalism.

The Trentonian used to have bikini models on Page 6 back in the 90s.

The older sister of a high school classmate of mine was a Page 6 girl in the Trentonian.

Do they still have them? Or when did they phase them out?

I haven't lived near Trenton for about 20 years, so I couldn't tell you. I go back to that area once a year or so - I'll try and get a Trentonian the next time I'm down there.

And the Providence and Boston Phoenix would have flyers in the middle for the strip clubs that seemed popular.

Strip clubs, “escorts,” personals, what Craigslist later called “casual encounters” — all of it was in stuff@night. I think stuff@night rivaled the size of the main section of the Phoenix at points in the ‘90s.

Reading it was quite the educational experience for a sheltered kid attending a Catholic high school. That's where I learned what a "preop" was.

I knew absolutely zero about The Messenger before today. I may not have all of the news world on my radar, but I think that still says something.

From the Axios story on the shutdown, I found this pretty on-target ... and a little depressing.

If there was any question about that premise being flawed before The Messenger’s flameout, there isn’t now.
