It's a grab for awards. Scott M. Reid does that kind of work, and they're letting him, as the enterprise reporter.

I figured he was angling to move to Pocatello like many of his neighbors have.

Basically the Guild refused to engage on the layoff process (instead spending their time on that wildly successful one-day strike) so the company did the layoffs by the contract: last in, first out.

Now the Guild is finally doing its job and trying to protect its members. Some near-retirement members are taking buyouts, basically saving the jobs of some of the newer hires.

I had that happen to me. I was laid off but brought back a month later in a different position when two coworkers left for new jobs, creating openings. My previous position had been eliminated, so I couldn't return to that.

As the kids say, some personal news: I have taken a buyout from the Los Angeles Times. My last day after 34+ years there (and 47 as a sportswriter) is scheduled for Feb. 27. Thank you to all who read me over the years on a variety of topics. It's time to let other folks solve the many problems we face in the newspaper business, and I need time to heal after my husbum's passing. I'll be working next week and am scheduled to wrap things up with a farewell column to be published Feb. 27. So, a little more to come...
