This reminds me of a little known movement of Finnish-American leftists who settled in the Soviet Union in the 1930s to help build a worker's paradise. The group got caught up in the Stalinist purges of that decade, and a large number of them were shot or sent to labor camps. Here is the bio of one of the movement's leaders, Oscar Corgan. Oskar Fredrik Kaarlonpoika Korgan (1887-1938) | WikiTree FREE Family Tree

Corgan's daughter wrote a series of books on her family's experiences. In a movieworthy twist, she reunited with the nation where she was born and the metropolitan area where she lived as a child when Duluth, MN, established a sister-city tie with her Soviet hometown. Minnesota journalist Laurie Hertzel was a co-author. https://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/they-took-my-father

She graduated a private girls school in Florida, from Georgetown and then Harvard law. Up from the mean streets by her bootstraps, indeed.
