Sports betting revenue tops $11 billion

I miss killing a couple of hours on a day off at matinee jai-alai.

 

Sports betting still isn't legal in Alabama.

The Giants fullback and quarterback both admitted to being offered $2,500 bribes to lose by more than the 10-point spread before the 1946 NFL championship game against the Bears. Hapes admitted being offered the cash before the game, and commissioner Bert Bell banned him from the championship game. Filchock didn't come clean until after the game, but probably wished he too had been banned, as he threw six interceptions in the Giants loss. Hapes never played again, and Filchock played in only one more game, four years later for the Baltimore Colts.

I can see where sports gambling can get dangerous. I bet small stakes and celebrate small victories, and by betting small, it's hard to get on the sort of losing streak that can get you in trouble. If you view it as a form of entertainment, it can be fun. If you're trying to use it as an income source, it would get very stressful, very quickly. I just like having a reason to zone in on a 6 p.m. college hoops game on CBS Sports Network when I'm having a happy hour beer, so I'll sprinkle something on a line or the over-under. Stakes are fun.

 

Yeah, management frowned on skill because it made it easier to pull the trigger on layoffs.

The large apartment building where CJ lives is only five minutes from the train station (13 minutes from Yonkers Raceway), and after I ring the outer bell, get buzzed into the lobby, take the elevator to four and walk through the long dim hall, he opens the door and leads me into the living room. I notice the TV sets, two of them, both turned on. CJ himself, T-shirted and unshaven, nearing 40, seems the least animate thing in the room right now, not yet having reached his Saturday afternoon glow point. Was covering a Legacy Fighting Association card on Friday in Santa Cruz. One of MMA's minor leagues. I'd glance at the video screen from time to time and, yes, there were ways to put a wager on the fights.

U.S. Integrity is a company that, per its website, partners with “some of the largest professional sports leagues and collegiate conferences in the U.S., as well as licensed sports-betting operators and regulators, to ensure sports betting integrity in every play, every game, every sport.”

One of its clients is the American Athletic Conference.

And so on Thursday, U.S. Integrity alerted casinos to suspicious betting activity on an AAC men’s basketball game between Temple and Alabama Birmingham, according to a Sports Illustrated report. SI added that, according to a “source in the gambling space,” the company has been monitoring Temple games “for a while.”
