Win a few times and they'll be a star and a household name for you. Like any of us knew who Scottie Scheffler was five years ago.

My favorite moments on this thread are when hondo explains how tournament golf works.

The superstars haven't done anything in 2024 and every sports league needs stars to perform like it.

Fine. I agree with you. But it's up to them to perform. In the meantime, why are Chris Kirk, Jake Knapp or Grayson Murray pilloried for doing their fucking job and making more birdies than the rest of the guys in the field that week? The guy guarding Steph Curry is under no obligation to step back and let him shoot uncovered. A pass rusher is under no obligation to stop 1 step short of sacking Patrick Mahomes. This whole thing of bitching about the guys who win golf tournaments is ludicrous, if they're making the birdies and McIlroy, Spieth and Cantlay aren't.

The Anthony Kim show is booked for LIV Saudi Arabia this week. A soft opening where there will be little to no golf media and fans.

I hope the guy does well -- maybe not well enough for LIV to take a victory lap, but would just be a fun story to see him come back from exile and show some game. Is there a comparable story about someone voluntarily staying away from a sport for a dozen years without a peep and then returning?

Not quite a dozen years though obviously was also much more successful before stepping away:

There's an autographed photo of Borg in front of me from a lunch we had when he launched his clothing line. He was perfectly nice and conversant as I recall.

I liked Kim when he was playing, but like I mentioned with regular LIV signings this one also does nothing for me. Like even if he's good, what's that mean? Shams breaks the news that he's signing with the Cleeks? And he makes 50 million by never winning anything? Plus he's a guy who won three times and whose best finish in a major was third, along with two other top-10 finishes in majors. The mystery at this point has been much more fascinating than he was as an actual golfer so again not seeing this one ever doing anything for LIV.

Also it hit me after I posted about everything I don't like about LIV that I somehow didn't even mention the team format! Yep, I like watching the Ryder Cup every two years. Zero desire to watch any other team competition involving golf.

This is just like the LIV, throwing wads of cash to a player who hasn't teed it up for a decade; I hope he shoots a hundred. The only story worth knowing about Kim was at the Ryder Cup team celebration. If anyone can find a player on that team to relate the story off the record, it's a keeper.

There's a lot of guys in golf now that make millions without winning anything. And Kim might have made millions if he had gone back to the Tour too -- he'd have had no trouble getting starts and some sponsor probably would have paid handsomely for the immediate exposure and hope of lightning in a bottle.

It is funny how LIV has hung its hat on team golf and now a guy without a team will have all eyes on him for the next few events.

I've seen the ratings. He will most definitely not have all eyes on him.

He better hit driver better than he did when he quit. Because driver yips are what killed his game.
