The backfire on this will create shrapnel that will blow the GOP glasspack muffler to smithereens. But I doubt they'll whip votes to this extreme.

They want the J6 Jezebels (MTG, Boebert) free to heckle.

I've been curious about that. The custom is that POTUS is "invited" by the House, but it's a joint session of Congress and the Constitution seems to suggest POTUS doesn't need a formal invitation.

    Section 3.
He shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in case of disagreement between them, with respect to the time of adjournment, he may adjourn them to such time as he shall think proper; he shall receive ambassadors and other public ministers; he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed, and shall commission all the officers of the United States.

It wasn't until Woodrow Wilson that a President went to Congress to give the State of the Union in person. Before that, it was a written message sent down to the Hill and read by the Clerk of the House to the assembled session. There's nothing that would or could prevent Biden from giving the address from the Oval Office on national TV with no Congress around, which is why this idea isn't going far.

The Trumpist klan has absolutely nothing to fear -- but perhaps much to gain -- from having Biden speak in public. I'm sure Fox and Newsmax and their other national media outlets (NYT, CNN) have already crafted their post-SOTU messages about how Biden is too old, frail and mentally soft to handle the job.

When is Scott Perry going to be thrown in the slammer for 1/6? Oh, never, that's right.
