I can’t help but wonder how much advertising plays a role in perception of the economy. I saw two local ads last night that played on the theme of “rising prices got you down? Come see us.” One was a local RV dealer. The other an HVAC business.

I completely agree with this. Ads for damn near everything on TV tout their product/service as an antidote for high prices, even for goods/services where prices have been pretty stable. Insurance, which is a product where prices have indeed gone much higher and still are, is a particular offender. "Only pay for what you need," "The General," etc.

The advertising doesn't make people perceive something. It reflects what they already are perceiving (or more accurately, what they are experiencing).

Oh come on. The whole point of advertising is to influence people's perceptions and thus to change (or reinforce) their behavior.

This pretty well nails it in the headline.

Inflation has fallen. Why are groceries still so expensive?
Ongoing supply chain disruptions, droughts, avian flu, labor shortage and more continue to keep grocery prices high

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/02/02/grocery-price-inflation-biden/

"The Groundwork Collaborative, a left-leaning think tank, reported Friday that almost 30 percent of the rise in grocery prices has been driven by just five categories of food particularly vulnerable to supply chain shocks, including beef, chicken, fruits and vegetables and snacks."

You think that it might not be a coincidence that shortly after a big Uncommitted vote in Michigan the U.S. began airdropping food into Gaza?

They need to be doing shiploads of relief supplies. It's doable and it's much closer to the needed scale. You can call to block it because some it it will fall into the hands of Hamas, but people are still starving. More than that, if you're a Palestinian with a hungry family and Hamas takes the donated food you've gotten, it's Hamas who takes the hatred and resentment, not the U.S.

    I hope we're both wrong.

Have to disagree here. The U.S. is an easy boogeyman. Look at how our country demonizes each other even when confronted with the truth.

We'll always be a boogeyman to them, and to some degree we've earned it. Still, a guy who grabs a case of MREs from an airdrop and has a Hamas gunman take it at gunpoint has a much more immediate beef with the guy who left his family hungry.

The headline reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of inflation.

As somebody whose job is influencing consumers, I can assure you that’s categorically false.
