They're getting Wilson for free. Even last year he wasn't THAT bad on the field. He's a very weird man, no doubt. And because it is a discussion topic here in New England, I question just how much of a role poor coaching plays in a young quarterback failing to thrive. Doubtless it's some of the problem, but quarterbacks are not houseplants. In the end, if they don't develop, it's on them. Pickett was given a more than fair chance to grab the Steelers' job. He couldn't.

If Wilson gets hurt, Pickett will have his final chance.

At this price, Wilson was a no-brainer.

What are the other options? Pickett? Fields? A Brinks truck for a different vet?

Maybe. But I just see the expectations that Tomlin has for the Steelers and the push to play a certain way and I don't think things like Russ' own office or his own training staff or family privileges are going to fly. I can't speak to taking plays off because that is a large problem and we don't entirely know how it was or wasn't dealt with because not everything from the locker room gets out. Yeah that's on Tomlin, but I don't know enough to have an intelligent comment. As for Antonio Brown, was anyone going to stop his nonsense? The dude literally quit his job in the middle of a game.

I thought the best option was to bring back Rudolph and let them compete. If Pickett can beat him out, he gets that third shot. If not, then the two of them act as a bridge until the team finds its next franchise quarterback. That's all Wilson is going to be, anyway.

Have analytics reached into the draft? Do teams try and quantify the best value of a player at a particular position? Best use of a draft pick? Or is it all projection and dependent on the quality of the player evaluation?

I bet there's some, like there's got to be some metrics where you can get best value for different positions. No one drafts a runningback first round any more. Linemen usually go high. But I think teams start with where is their greatest need and where is the greatest talent. QBs have the highest value and everyone wants the Brock Purdy situation (high talent, low pay). DEs because they disrupt the quartberback. OL to protect the QB and so on. The draft is such a crap shoot and guys like Mel Kiper are lying when they make projections.

Nah. That's 2027 Super Bowl MVP Hendon Hooker's job. :)

I know he missed some time, about six weeks with a meniscus thing. He was pretty good in the SB though, he was in the KC backfield on nearly every series. Might've had a sack too.

    1. Everyone wants the Brock Purdy scenario, but almost all of them will draft a QB higher than his evaluated grade -- often much higher -- because he's a QB.

    2. Mel Kiper is a carnival barker and always has been.
