This Ohtani story is bonkers. And seemingly a long way from seeing the whole picture.

This game is a classic example of what goes wrong with pitchers when you don't have them properly prepared to start the season.

Probably end up 19-17 with 42 hits (and lots of RBIs).

The ESPN interview, if you can call it that, with Teoscar Hernandez, was so unwatchably bad that I switched to SportsNet LA on MLB.TV.

The A's team payroll isn't just the lowest in the league, it is $24m below the next lowest (Pirates), and more than $100m below the league AVERAGE. Honestly, I'm not saying teams should be required to spend money they don't have, but very clearly the franchise has it (MLB revenues were $11b last year) - so either staff an actual major league roster or WIN enough. The MLBPA is ticked off that FAs aren't cashing in as much as they hoped - putting in a salary floor would probably help.

MLB has needed a salary floor for a long time. What the A's are doing isn't new, but it is bad for baseball. Unfortunately, the owners won't allow a floor without a cap, and the MLBPA is too strong to allow a cap.
