Postulate: Many of our nation's best mental health practitioners spend their time with people who don't really need them, and in order to redeploy care to people who actually do need the help, most people should reduce or stop entirely their mental health counseling intake.

I commute through either Penn Station or Port Authority and work near Grand Central. While I am only a sporadic subway traveler, I walk a lot in Manhattan. I don’t think that the mentally ill homelessness problem is any worse than it has been since I first started working in Manhattan for summer jobs in the late 1980s. But I also don’t know what you do about it — Neely seemed beyond help based on what you read about him. Do you just institutionalize him and drug him up? Is that any less humane than leaving him on the street to menace people. I just don’t know what the answer is.
