    Last season the Saturday tripleheader was December 16, so it's two weeks after the college conference championship games and a week after Army-Navy.

    It should make for a lot more kickoff returns and some creativity. Plus the special teams coaches in the NFL are smart enough, that I think you'll see a bump in KO returns for touchdowns -- at least in the first year until the coverage side adjusts. By giving the ball to the offense on the 30 with a touchback, it also emphasizes accuracy with the kickoff game. And kickers are so good these days they'll work those corners.

    It's certainly gimmicky, but I do think fans will like it. I think full-speed collisions will be eliminated on that play and the number of injuries will be reduced significantly.

    NFL can't play on Fridays and Saturdays from the second weekend in September through the second weekend in December. (That's how they are getting away with the Week 1 Friday game in Brazil on a Friday.) So if they hold to form, the Saturday tripleheader will be on Dec. 20 this year. At a minimum it will be a doubleheader since you need four teams playing that day to fill the Christmas games.

    There will be a College Football Playoff tripleheader on Dec. 20. Conference title games are Dec. 7 and Army-Navy is Dec. 14.

    I'm in the middle of the Pearlman book on it. Interesting read, because unlike most sports books I've read in the last many years, I don't remember the story that well. I know the ending but was hazy on the rest. I'm finding the Trump parts interesting and entirely unsurprising, but I wonder what it would sound like if written by someone who didn't already hate him this much.

    One question about the kicking thing - the team kicking the ball can still punt it right?

    On kickoffs? Only on a safety. Speaking of which, how do they line up after a safety?

    That's a good question.

    Did some digging.

    * Penalties on scoring plays will be enforced on the try and do not carry over to the kickoff.
    * Penalties on the try can carry over to the kickoff, but only where the kicker kicks from changes. Rest of kicking team lines up with one foot on the B40 as usual. Receiving team lines up between the B35 and B30 with seven receiving team players having a foot on the B35. Other two not on the B35 must be outside the hashes. Maximum of two receiving team players are in the landing zone (B20 to the end zone).
    * No one moves until the ball bounces in the landing zone or is caught by a receiving player. Note: Kicker cannot cross the 50 until the ball hits the ground or touches a player in the setup zone.
    * A kick that lands short of the B20 is treated like a kick out of bounds and the ball goes to the receiving team at its 40.
    * No fair catches
    * If there is a safety, the kick is still from the 20. Setup zones for both do not change. Player can still use a tee or punt.

    I wonder what the call will be when a line drive kick, intentional or accidentally trying to land in the zone with some bounce to it, hits one of the stationary by rule return blockers. Will it be like HBP in baseball and they have to try and dodge it?

    Yup, get out of the way, let it bounce before the 20, play is dead, receiving team ball at its 40.
