True. It would be a desperation move. I think Kentucky is about two more refusals from desperation.

Calipari officially announced he was stepping down about lunchtime Tuesday. I realize the portal is a thing, but it is crazy to me how quickly people are willing to declare a school is in panic mode, particularly one that almost by necessity has to start at the very top of the food chain when asking.

Folks ... this is part of why the March run for NCSU was so crucial.

After Herb Sendek left, Lee Fowler went after Rick Barnes and John Calipari. Both leveraged extensions and raises out of the process. NCSU, out of desperation, ended up with Sidney Lowe.

TL;DR interpretation: Careful what you wish for. Kentucky, like NCSU, thinks it can get anyone at any time. Um ... no. Doesn't work like that.

If he wasn't a national champ alum, I dont think he gets this job. You don't have his resume and think this is the guy. He's gotta have some big backers in his corner.

I get who they were turned down that we know about but this seems like a stop-gap guy.

Is a weird time in mbb - a lot of the "names" have retired, conference realignment and NIL have left everything up in the air. A "stop-gap guy" might be perfect in a sport and a school that needs to figure out what they really want. Also coming so late in the process hampered things. I imagine there are a few people who took jobs in the last month that took "P5" jobs who would have loved to have wound up in Lexington.

The Pope hiring seems frighteningly underwhelming to me.
I’m curious IF they brought Pitino back…..what the reaction would have been.

Then mention one of those schools has more recently made the Final Four…

Honestly, UK hiring Arkansas HC John Calipari would be a bigger deal than hiring Pope from BYU.

I know it's been said, but I still can't believe all the chaos SMU caused by firing their head coach.
