But you view the other side as a monolith and any opinion expressed is an affirmation of every idea you attribute to Trump and MAGA rather than considering it the merits of the argument.

Well, here’s the thing: Until 2009, I was registered to vote as a Republican. I actually do believe in the concepts of limited government, strong national defense and personal responsibility. I have over the years grown to believe that we do have a responsibility to help fellow citizens, and that government should be empowered to carry out that responsibility.

The Republican Party as it is currently constituted is built on lies. The Republican Party as it is currently constituted wants to hurt two of my three children (one who is trans and one who is a woman with a pre-existing medical condition that would make carrying a pregnancy to term dangerous), which makes it personal. The Republican Party as it is currently constituted is led by Donald Trump, who is not a conservative.

So, yeah, I do automatically discount almost all of what the current Republican Party stands for. And any question I had about taking that stand was answered on January 6, 2021.

This version of the Republican Party is not “bringing ideas to the table for consideration.” This version is objectively wrong and needs to be defeated at every turn.

 

Except hitting curveballs.
