I really admire the longtime baseball guys. RIP, Whitey.

The Mets didn't know what they had. Idiot Bob Short didn't, either. Gene Autry might have, but didn't pull the trigger. Ewing and Muriel Kauffman became jealous.
Old Auggie Busch snared his man.
Highly recommend his book co-authored by Kevin Horrigan.

Tough week for St. Louis, and it's still early.
Ken Holtzman was born there and died there, too.

RIP, Whitey. One of the all-time great managers and baseball lifers.

Herzog once got into a fight with Roger Craig during a particulary, shall we say tense, series in St. Louis.

And a couple of years later, there was this one featuring Will Clark, Jose Oquendo and Ozzie Smith.

And then Clark played out his career in STL.

Herzog notwithstanding, of course it's Cardinals fans cheering "Whitey! Whitey! Whitey!"

Between Erskine, Herzog, Holtzman and even Sterling's retirement - you almost wonder if they just "hold on" to see the start of "one more season." Always had a theory that a lot of older folks just want to make it through the holidays before passing. And of course, the Adams/Jefferson two-fer on the 5oth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
