So weird note, but I covered the very first Phoenix Mercury game, on June 22, 1997. They beat the Charlotte Sting (RIP) 76-59. The idea that the league would turn into what it is today was a total pipe dream. The Washington Mystics are now moving certain games to Capital One because of fan interest. There was barely any interest then because it was such an anomaly. Good for the league. Good for women's basketball. It's so much better than it was 20-plus years ago, so much deeper, and it deserves that's coming around now.

 

I would love for Doyel to go through the thought process behind this exchange. Usually I’m against the mob calling for jobs, but this is wild.

What else is an Indy columnist going to write about between the 500 and Colts camp?

 

I was thinking about what the WNBA needs - and it is a) never refer to them as "girls" - imagine someone trying something similar in the NBA....whoa. b) the basketball isn't going to cut it. But don't worry, actual coverage of the games isn't what creates fan interest - whether its the NBA, MLB or NFL, what drives coverage is who is pissed with who, who is following who on IG, which star wants a coach fired or a trade or a new contract, etc. etc. A good fight in the WNBA in an early game would do a lot for the league - and I'm not kidding. Clark drives to the hoop and gets hammered the the rest of the Fever start going five-on-five hockey style. Maybe a gambling scandal, shady refereeing,
