It's been six months since Hamas attacked Israel and Israel responded with war. Since then, the most frequent complaint we get in the Public Editor inbox is that NPR has downplayed the suffering of Israelis while calling attention to the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.

It was also one criticism of many mentioned in a column last week from an NPR editor. It raises a question: Should the news coverage of this war be proportional to the number of civilian deaths and suffering?

I don't envy their decision.

Jews are both a historically and repeatedly persecuted group in the past and the present, who have responded to a heinous terrorist attack by a group that is a clear and present existential threat by something that, at minimum constitutes indiscriminate killing and deprivation of civilians and at maximum constitutes genocide.

One way or the other, the people you don't support think you're siding with people who want to wipe them off the face of the earth.
