    He got off light.
The Next Big Thing is team sports is in town and the columnist can’t cover the story in person because he overtly and unprofessionally flirted with her.
If you think there’s a business value in having a sports columnist and you have decided that columnist has to be excluded from the big story, why is he still employed at all?

Super-Gannett-y call to suspend him and have him write columns off teevee.

Really? His actions at the press conference were cheesy and kind of gross, but in my 30 years in this business I've witnessed far too many reporters "flirting" with people they cover, and not one has been suspended.

How ironic that Doyel's predecessor at the IndyStar broke this. And hypocritical that the Star wouldn't put this out first. Not to mention it should have been done within days of the incident, which would have shown some guts. Now the editor and Doyel won't comment.

I wonder if the Fever had any say in this. Clark's welcome press conference was a big deal and the biggest story out of it was Doyel's idiocy. The team may have decided not to credential him for the season.

I remember covering Carmelo Anthony's press conference when he signed with the Knicks. The behavior of a reporter asking him questions and blatantly flirting with him while his wife stood off to the side disturbed everyone present -- journalists, team execs, PR folks. Nothing happened to her; nobody wrote about it, we all just rolled our eyes.

And yes, I'm sure the Fever made their concerns known. As they should! If the Knicks ever voiced their concerns, it went unnoticed, because the reporter mentioned went on to have a fine career. Different times, different faces, different standards.

What kind of outlet was that person from -- daily newspaper, television station, prominent radio station, what?

    TV.
And I know that TV people are often held to different (lower) standards, but they shouldn't be. Especially considering the majority of consumers get their news from that medium.

Thankfully 15 years after a TV reporter embarrassed herself with unprofessional behavior, that shit gets addressed now. I'm sure Pat Beverley would have gotten away with his bullshit a few years. But today he doesn't. We're getting better.

FWIW I thought he definitely deserved to be reprimanded. Just a ridiculous lack of professionalism. Him not being allowed to cover Fever games live gives off the impression like he's been stalking her and there's a restraining order against him. THAT seems a little excessive.

What exactly did Doyel do off-camera?
Can't see it in the video clip above.
