I just read a long story about a guy who had been living in a furnished crawl space of a Toys R Us. His day job was robbing fast food and other businesses.

I spent so much time in the newsroom and made so little money that I always did the napkin math of how much money I would’ve saved by sleeping in the old abandoned dentist’s office on the second floor of newspaper building. It was like 3,000 square feet of abandoned office space straight out of 1977 with 100 years of old photos and newspapers just collecting dust.

When I worked two full-time jobs, I did have a sleeping bag and slept a couple of nights under my desk at another stop.

You know, my life is way weirder to me when I actually type these sentences out.

I got married and my wife sometimes would stare slack-jawed at me as if I was describing my life as if I were a reformed hobo.

    JOURNALISM!

In 2019, when we still had a physical office to go to, one of my coworkers was fired after they discovered him sleeping on site every evening. If it had just been that they were prepared to have more sympathy, but apparently he decided our manager’s office would make for roomier living and helped himself.

Since this thread is a catch all for anything money or business related. ....

Jim Simons, ‘Quant King’ at Renaissance Technologies, Dies at 86

Jim Simons died. He founded Rensaisance Technologies, whose Medallion fund, a quant fund that made trades based on mathematical and statistical analysis, returned more than 66 percent annualized before fees over a 30 year span.

His career was even more remarkable, because the models the mathematicians he was hiring would develop would give them an edge for only so long before the markts caught up to what they were doing, and these guys remained a step ahead of everyone else for about 2 decades anyhow. Simons was a genius (in terms of raw brain power).

“Uh, I’m calling to report prime Jennifer Connelly is living in the Target I’m managing.”

“Sir, this is a line to report crimes, not brag.”
