Much-maligned umpire Ángel Hernández to retire from Major League Baseball

That is one call no one will choose to review.

 

Hernandez worked only 10 games last season because of a back injury, but he missed 161 calls, according to Umpire Auditor.

 

It is curious he’s doing it now. The story hinted this might be MLB finally telling him to pound sand, but in a union agreeable way. I guess it could also be health. For humanity’s sake, hope it’s the former. For baseball’s sake, it will be good to have him gone.

 

But “was never considered MLB’s worst umpire” according to MLB’s statistical studies. Who TF missed more than 16.1 calls per game?

 

Came to ask when The Athletic is going to run the Angel Hernandez redemption story, but it was already published:

I read that the other day. In hindsight, it smacks of “If we say nice things will you go away?”
