Meanwhile:

 

All those things, other than catcher's interference, which almost never happens, could be judged just fine by the field ups and/or replays. Baseball cuts costs every chance it gets. RIFing a quarter of the umps represents a chance to lop a huge chunk. Happens all the time in union situations.

Not gonna happen. Never mind the myriad examples I wrote about that require a plate ump, there's no way a field ump could be in position to call a close play at home.

Besides that, I suspect it's a rule change the MLBPA would have to approve. That won't ever happen.

 

Nor will electronic balls and strikes. And close plays at home could be just as easily decided by replay. Like football: review all scoring plays. Literally everything the umps do, all of them, could be handled just fine by other means.
