Every so often, somebody will do a Player A played with Player B who played with Player C and so on until they connect with Cy Young or Wee Willie Keeler. We don't have to work that hard to find connections to the institutional racism this nation inflicted on our fellow citizens. Hell, there are still survivors of the Tulsa and Elaine race massacres.

Reggie Jackson’s year in Birmingham was 1967. By coincidence, this came up on my Facebook page this morning from an account devoted to state political history:

During this era when many colleges and universities across the south are issuing blanket bans of Confederate flags, statues, and similar iconography, it is interesting to note that just 55 years ago, one Alabama legislator passed a measure mandating their display on campuses and even earmarked funding for one state school to purchase them.

In 1967, Sen. Alton Turner (D - Luverne) noticed that the University of Alabama did not fly a Confederate flag when Gov. Lurleen Wallace participated in the annual Governor’s Day ceremonies on campus that year.

When Turner asked college administration officials about the flag’s absence, University President Frank Rose replied that the Confederate flag was “too controversial” at that particular time of student activism, civil rights struggles, and campus unrest.

Angered by the response, Turner, who chaired the budget-writing Finance and Taxation Committee in the Alabama Senate, quickly sponsored and passed a bill mandating the University of Alabama to purchase a Confederate flag and a flag pole upon which to fly it.

He even included a specific $195.67 line-item appropriation in the state budget for the University to purchase them.

The influential legislator also passed a separate measure requiring every state college and university to fly the Confederate flag and play “Dixie” during all home football games. It required the U.S. flag to be displayed and the “Star Spangled Banner” to be played, as well.

Though some legislators attempted to filibuster Turner’s mandates, they both passed the Senate and House and were signed by Gov. Lurleen Wallace.

According to an Associated Press story, “Auburn, Florence State College, Jacksonville State University, Livingston State College, and Troy State College,” all indicated they would comply with the legislative resolution’s mandate.

“We’ve been doing that all the time,” one college president said. “In fact, we play [“Dixie”] just about every time we score a touchdown.”

The state’s two predominantly African-American public colleges, Alabama State and Alabama A&M, however, said they planned to ignore the decree.

“You can’t just ram things down people’s throats,” Alabama A&M President R.D. Morrison said. “This is a good way to get things stirred up.”

Morrision also predicted the college’s band director would likely have difficulty locating sheet music for “Dixie.”

His parents, Adriana and Shawn Allen, have been in contact with the school about contesting the grade, but in the meantime opted for him to enroll in summer school to make up for the grade. They did not want to risk the possibility of the D sticking on their son’s transcript, which would prevent him from being college-eligible and playing baseball at one of his dream schools.

Despite being targeted on Nguyen’s exam, the Allens’ son said that he doesn’t want to see Nguyen be fired. However, he would like to see accountability in the form of an apology to the students of Luther Burbank at large, especially because the questions on the test targeted nonwhite students, who make up 97% of the student population.

“I’d want him to apologize to Burbank as a whole, because that’s the majority of our kids,” the student said. “So for him to say those things, it’s pretty messed up.”

Warming up for convention week.

Surveillance and body camera video viewed by Mitchell's family and their lawyers Wednesday at the district attorney's office showed an unarmed man fleeing for his life while being punched and kicked, they said during an afternoon news conference.

"What I saw today was disgusting. It makes me sick to my stomach," Mitchell's widow, DeAsia Harmon said. "He ran for his life. He was trying to leave. He said 'I'll go,' and they didn't let him go."

Harmon said the video showed a bleeding Mitchell being dragged outside the hotel. "They didn't stop. They could have let him go, but they didn't," she said.

Noted civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump said the family's legal team also has a signed affidavit from a hotel employee who said a security guard was striking Mitchell with a baton and that Mitchell posed no threat when he was on the ground. The worker said a security guard ordered him and a bellman to help hold Mitchell down, Crump continued.

That was so over-the-top inappropriate and ridiculous that I was laughing while reading it. It felt like he thought he was being funny, and how unfunny it was makes it even funnier, if that makes sense.

There has to be a story beyond the story for what he was thinking (or not thinking).
