Sigh. There are so many misconceptions about golf and the environment. It's a battle we fight at the admin level all the time. There have been so many advancements in pesticide science and water conservation that it's silly for people to take the myopic view that golf is terrible for the environment. Many golf courses also serve as bird sanctuaries and are Audubon certified. Almost all use non-potable recycled wastewater for irrigation purposes. No one in Arizona is losing drinking water because of golf courses.

    "Almost all..."

    USGA says 12%.

But then, 41% of golfers polled think climate change is a myth, according to Golf Digest.

Should have said almost all in my state. That USGA number is surprisingly low.

Let’s give it up to Frank Bensel Jr, who made back to back fucking aces in the U.S. senior Open today but managed to miss the cut by seven strokes. Eek.

That's entirely more awesome than if he'd made the cut. "For 20 minutes there, I was the greatest golfer who ever lived!"

Followed up by four straight bogeys. Two aces on the front side and still shoot over par.

Geezer golf update: LIV Golf's Richard Bland won the U.S. Senior Open this morning (weather-delayed from Sunday in Newport). He also won the Senior PGA in May. Now needs the Senior British for a helluva trifecta.

It's making for some interesting social media posts, like from the tour he's not eligible to play on:

    Man, he's insufferable.

Edit: LIV Golf plays the same week as the Senior British Open, though if the league is smart they'll let Bland out for a week to try to beat the other geezers one more time.

Fuck that. If I'm Bland I'm playing the major and telling LIV to fuck way off. Let's let them try to hold him to the contract.

A flamethrower on the environment, Carl Hiaasen, wrote a book on becoming closer to his father later in life by playing more golf with him ("The Downhill Lie"). I did a review of the book and the publisher got Hiaasen to call me. Aside from the honor of talking to a guy whose every word I have devoured, it was interesting to hear his take on golf course and what they do for the environment. Essentially, he said it was way better than paving over greenspace for a shopping mall, parking lot or development.
