2024 college football offseason thread

Arkansas still gets up for old SWC foes, even after 30+ years. Their games against Aggie in Jerry World are usually competitive. Don't sleep on the Hogs.

I did not know that UCLA plays at Hawaii this year. That's a big reason for its 22K travel miles.

However, I also did not know it's essentially the same straight-line distance from UCLA to Rutgers (2440) and Maryland (2330) as it is from UCLA to Honolulu (2560).

 

While it's much more fun to bash UCLA and USC, I believe at least half of the B1G plays in the Central Time Zone. Cal and Stanford, on the other hand, are looking at a lot of round trips to RDU.

 

At 30 cents on the dollar in rights fees for the foreseeable future. Cal's already several hundred million in the hole, maybe double that. Asking the old Blues to pony up for football games against Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College and Wake Forest is a big ask. Not because of their ability, but they just don't move the needle one iota out here.

 

Breaking that Rose Bowl streak is looking even less likely now. Still, Memorial Stadium has one of the best views for a football stadium placed on a major faultline, especially when Cal is losing and looking sailboats on the bay is more interesting.

A bad summer for Utah State has gotten considerably worse.

And there's Stanford, which goes from ending the season vs. Notre Dame every other Thanksgiving weekend to resuming the Bill Walsh Legacy series with San Jose State.

 

The series is at Notre Dame this year, so it's played in October.

Stanford routinely inflates its home attendance by about 10K per game. They'll announce 25-30 K when there clearly are about 15k at most in the stands. This year it has TCU, Cal Poly, Va. Tech, SMU, Wake and Louisville at home. If they counted actual butts in seats, they won't surpass 100,000. What an absolutely terrible home schedule for a West Coast team, and especially a West Coast school where no one cares about football unless you're playing ND, Cal or SC.
