Ford took the oath the day after Nixon resigned. LBJ took the oath on a plane (yeah, different circumstances).

There are no states/votes to certify that I can see.

    Now, naming a new vice-president and getting him/her confirmed . . .

If Biden resigns, Johnson does not become VP. He is next in succession for POTUS, but he is not the vice president.

Formally, President Harris would then have to nominate a VP (which of course the GOP would block, and would never be confirmed by Election Day, and probably not by Inauguration Day), presumably her ticket mate, although it wouldn't have to be.

Celebrate at your own risk. Do you really think that the enthusiasm is for her and not for "not Joe "?
Do you think there would be less for any of the other names being thrown around (except shapiro of course who has some in the party "worried" as we see in the nyt today?

Well the NABJ leadership contradicted itself multiple times in terms of Harris's supposed invitation. Word is they gave her a late invite, she said she would be at Sheila Jackson Lee's funeral and could do a virtual Q&A or do another day of the conference. They said no and insisted she had to be there. She said it wasn't possible. Then I guess they officially said she turned them down to quell some of the criticism. Then the real story came out and they begged her to do the virtual thing, but you know a Presidential candidate has a busy schedule and openings in that schedule close quickly. Anyway it didn't happen, it isn't happening and it what it is.

New VP appointee still is subject to congressional approval.

And virtually certain roadblocking until Inauguration Day, as noted above. Which would be loudly noted by Democrats as proof of the fascist party's nihilistic obstructionism.

Assuming the procedural duties of VP in terms of presiding over the Senate in such a situation would be president pro Tempore Patty Murray, D-Washington.

Ford became president on Aug. 9, 1974.

He nominated Rockefeller on Aug. 20.

Rockefeller underwent hearings and wasn't sworn in until Dec. 19.

What don't you understand? Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because this is the National Association of BLACK JOURNALISTS and we allowed our annual convention to be headlined by a man that many believe to be a racist AND is someone who has spent the past decade convincing his passionate fans that the press is the enemy of the people. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because they allowed our convention to predictably turn into a PR platform for Trump and a circus for attendees. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because there are young journalists in attendance whose college lives have been upended by the anti-DEI policies championed by this man and his party. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because Trump's presence caused several events at the convention to be postponed or cancelled or maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because some attendees now had to cover this event instead of just enjoying the convention. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because an invitation was extended to Trump to speak in a city he has consistently insulted but is the home to many NABJ members. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because we view the convention as a family reunion and a man was invited into our home who then proceeded to constantly berate one of our sisters, disrespect our organization and question the racial identity of a woman who belongs to the same Black sorority of many attendees.

Or maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because NABJ announced that Trump was coming on a Monday night when the convention started on Wednesday. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because concessions were made for Trump that were not made for Kamala. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because members of the board publicly gaslit and talked down to those who pushed back after the announcement. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because they feel that the board has been less than transparent about this decision. Maybe people are upset with NABJ leadership because they feel that the board represented its interests and not its members.

Perhaps a greater good was served by Trump's appearance yesterday. As I've stated before in this thread, I believe the negative impact has been overblown and exaggerated but we'll see. If you got what you wanted, good for you. But this came at a cost, and don't you dare downplay the pain that was caused this week just because of your ignorance.

These two guys plus some Russian dissidents being released. The only thing I don't like about this is that while I have seen zero reporting on who was released to make the other half of this deal, I have little doubt that they were legit spies and agents, as opposed to people grabbed off the street and convicted to use as bargaining chips. That said, I'm very happy that we got our people out.

She is? Has the woman ever actually held a job not connected to Trump or reality TV?

The logic behind the NABJ invitation:

    The greatest Sir Story yet.
