Trump already delivered a Supreme Court, and Dobbs.

Those battles going forward will be won or lost in the statehouses.

I guess I'm not sure he has much to say to rural voters.

 

Shapiro has baggage. In his own campaign, he'd likely to be able to overcome it, especially given the length of a normal campaign. In a dead sprint to the finish here, though, that baggage could be costly. Some of Shapiro's policies and past statements are national issues - Israel/Palestine, vouchers, etc. - and the problem would extend beyond Pennsylvania.

Walz' baggage is limited. There's the DWI, but he's been clean since and there is ample documentation of his medical history to back his claims of damaged hearing at least being a contributor to the incident. There was a Swift-Boat style campaign against him in his run for governor, but again - the records back his claims to service and he has never claimed to have seen combat. And the George Floyd protest problems won't be an issue for most moderates and certainly not any hardened Democrats.

There is a lot to be said for sustaining momentum. Walz continues the good vibes. If she picks Shapiro, the campaign is immediate on the defense, rightly or wrongly. People have formed opinions already about Shapiro. People are still learning about Walz, and it's predominantly good stuff. It allows the campaign time to continue to introduce him as America's Dad.

 

1. Why? Walz said it perfectly - who is actually focused on these ridiculous fixations Trump, Vance, and the rest of MAGA has? Real Americans, even hard conservatives, aren't talking about banning books or France's weird opening ceremony. Real Americans are talking about wages and jobs, housing, the cost of food, etc.

2. Newsflash - no one the Democrats picked would change anyone's opinion on abortion law. The entire party wants to codify Roe v. Wade. Some conservative farmer in South Dakota isn't going to suddenly change their mind on abortion because of who Harris picked as VP. What Walz does that Trump, Vance, and the far right don't get is connect with those rural Americans in other ways. He's a teacher - talk about the needs of small rural districts in the middle of Pennsylvania. He's a football coach - talk ball and talk creating new opportunities and careers for those teens. He's a gun owner - talk about responsible gun safety and gun measures to ensure that hunters, ranchers, and others can properly own a firearm while ensuring our schools and public spaces are safe.

He can be real with them because it's who he is, compared the flimsy facade Trump and Vance have tried to construct.

 

She's a former school administrator. She's probably still conditioned to have all of five minutes to focus on something before getting pulled away to deal with something else.

 

Midwesterners cannot just say "goodbye." It's not in their DNA. If it doesn't take three hours, a dessert to go and a chance to be introduced and hug everyone within a city block when saying goodbye to someone from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois or Michigan, you're not doing it right.

Calling some of the more extreme MAGA points “weird” is effective because for those people who don’t live in the right wing social media/opinion TV world, it just is. Banning books, calling people groomers, restricting out of state travel for abortions, monitoring menstrual cycle, etc. is just weird.

 

Click out your stopwatches before Team MAGGAT cooks up more "sniffing little girls" bullshit.
