It’s not a “nothingburger,” but as usual, the hand is being overplayed.

Feel free to dig down in the minutiae of Walz’ word choices a decade and a half ago, but he clearly said he’s been to “war” when he never saw combat.

The retirement thing is pretty stupid. You don’t just unilaterally and instantly decide to retire from the military. It’s a process. One that takes months, and requires the approval of your commanding officer. They’re talking like he went AWOL the day his unit was boarding the plane to Kuwait. He retired two months before his unit got its orders, four months before it started mobilizing, and 10 months before they deployed. It had likely been in the works for 5-6 months before that.

Without saying that you automatically lead people to believe it was to Afghanistan, which is the deceptive omission his 2005 press release made.
