Masculinity crisis: semi-sentient spiral-cut ham must learn to contour his blush.

If only New York Military Academy hadn’t been biased towards girls a decade before going co-ed.

Self doubt and self loathing is a human issue. Pigeonholing it to a gender, race, continent and economic system strikes me - and perhaps only me - as reheated socialist theory.

I can't decide if you were shoved into too many lockers or not enough.

My father and a number of my uncles enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the '30s and early '40s. I think a lot of young people would consider enlisting in such a program if the rewards were adequate, such as reasonable pay, a decent place to live and access to postsecondary education or training similar to the GI Bill. It needn't be compulsory if it was offered as an alternative to college or the military.

We have programs like Americorps, but they don't have the visibility that the local Army recruiting centers have. People interested in the building trades could gain valuable experience building and rehabbing affordable housing if the next administration makes housing a priority.

A lot of my former newspaper colleagues had experiences with the Peace Corps, which served as a means to avoid the military draft and service as an occupying force in a rebellious foreign country. Unfortunately, the US has spent a lot of blood and capital on similarly unsuccessful efforts in this century. If that's the fate of our armed forces, I'd rather see some of the billions spent on them to improve conditions in this country.
