My elementary school had no AC. The teacher had to get one of those hooks on a pole to open the windows that were up high to get some breeze in the hot first weeks, which usually ended by mid-September.

My middle school, OTOH, was completely opposite. No windows at all except at the doors. Everything was, and I assume still is, HVAC maintained. Don't remember any power outages during the school day, thank Tebow.

Howard – along with researchers from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, in Maryland, and Pennsylvania State University – examined death certificate data between 1999 and 2023. Deaths were counted if heat was listed as an underlying or contributing cause of death.

Attributing heat in death certificates is handled differently in counties across the country, said Ashley Ward, director of the Heat Policy Innovation Hub at Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainability.“There needs to be guidance and standards developed for how we determine heat is a contributor.”

In other words, we have no idea what the numbers are - they could be far worse now, or worse than we think 25, 50, 75 years ago - because we have no standardization of how we count.

    And that matters.

Climate change coverage is of the heads I win/tails you lose variety. Has been for quite awhile. That doesn't mean climate change isn't real, or that it's not affecting things. But pretty much every weather event, at this point, is counted as proof.

Today was one of those days that suuuuuucked.
It was a pretty pleasant 58 when I went out this morning. It was 88 when I walked out of work. Felt like getting swatted with an oar.
