He's not the player he was in his prime. He's not close to that. He wouldn't have been available if he was still that guy, but his numbers rebounded significantly last season. I think he can be an improvement over what they had most of last season, but that's a low bar. I think he is more likely to be competent than terrible, but the supporting cast is going to be important. The line has to be better. It can be if Broderick Jones gets healthy, which he hasn't been in preseason. They also need help at wide receiver. I get why they traded Diontae Johnson, but the plan they had to replace him was insufficient.

Schefter breathlessly tweeting out every 5th stringer who is getting cut today. Must be an exhausting life.

Joe Milton makes the Patriots' 53-man roster.

Well, they're set whenever they need a 90-yard Hail Mary. (but he'll still probably throw it out of the end zone)

As one of my golf partners said of Milton, "Well, the way they block, they need at least one QB who can run away from the defense."

Give them a cannon-armed QB and coaches turn into a teen girl crushing on a juvenile delinquent. “But I can save him!”

Good news for those who felt there wasn't enough money sloshing around the NFL -- private equity is here!

It should be interesting. Figure teams cost so much these days, most new ownership groups are defacto "hedge funds" in any event finding enough billionaires and millionaires to purchase a controlling stake. Can't wait until these PE folks start offering suggestions to owners on bringing in even more cash - and of course, spending less doing it. It blows my mind that they are allowing PEs to own a stake in more than one club. Packers made more than $60m, proof once again that the owners are always the highest paid in any organization.

    Should they not be?

I will only say this, back in the day sports team owners were at least portrayed to be like public benefactors. Rich folks who sunk a lot of dough into the local team, like other rich folks donate huge sums to build an opera house or public park. They made their money back when they unloaded the team. I'm sure most franchises made a decent profit in any event. The good owners would turn the profit into building a better team. Now I'm guessing its all relative. You throw a few billion in to buy a franchise and make $60m or whatever every year, that maybe covers the interest if a loan was involved.
But my real beef is how the NBA and NFL have build in "curbs" to keep owners from putting the money back into the team and getting better players. They can' do that even if they wanted.
And how fans criticize players from wanting as big of a slice of the pie as they can get.

Why shouldn't they do that? It helps their bottom lines and ensures a level playing field for the teams.
