My brother in law was an audiophile, but he was low key about it. Not snotty, no comparisons, anything like that. He got the bug and over the years he bought a ton of used gear, sold and swapped and refined what he had until his listening room was a gem. You'd be amazed at the sort of gear he found at garage sales for a little bit of nothing. Klipsch horns. SVS subwoofers, one of which he gave me when he upgraded. It was basically all for his enjoyment. There was one chair in the sweet spot to listen, although another could be pulled into place if he had a guest. There was a big screen TV for football. We're talking about a guy who still owned the Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry records he bought as a teenager, and he continued to collect music until he passed.

He was pretty much the opposite of what most of us think of when "audiophile" comes up, but lord the music sounded great.

Were Cheapies T Shirts a thing? I have a vague memory of people wearing them in the 80s.

Sam the Record Man in Montreal was outstanding. It was right beside another big store - A & A maybe - and so much better.

I miss part of a Saturday’s activities including a trip to the record store.

I remember them, didn't have one but I recall them.

Sam's flagship location on Yonge St. in Toronto was next door to A&A's but there was absolutely no comparison. (Sunrise Records, which bought what was left of HMV up here, was across the street.) Sam's was the home of serious music junkies, the higher up in the store you went the more serious the people working there and browsing the bins got. I always avoided the chaos of the main floor and headed to the blues and jazz floors. I could spend hours there, browsing and listening.

Wait until she tells them how many 1990s rockers name-dropped her/lusted after her in songs.

(Rick Stain -- and I -- still would!)

I'm just picturing Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum watching Stranger Things with his kid and pointing at the screen, trying to convince the skeptical child that he dated her for years.
