I'm on another $1/month deal. At this point it's like MLB At Bat audio. I'll use it a few times at the beginning of the season, forget I have it all summer and then go back for the playoffs. Kinda the same for The Athletic.

Clearly The Athletic likes all you low-cost renewal folks more than it likes me. :)

All you have to do is reach out to their renewal subscription customer service reps, tell them you don't plan on renewing unless they give you a good offer, and you can pretty much guarantee they'll come back with an offer you can't refuse (if you REALLY want to continue subscribing, that is).

Coming right on the heels of another Athletic original, Dana O'Neil, exiting for a PR gig at Villanova:

I guess eight years is a long time at gigs in a peripatetic profession. But the odds aren't good they're gonna replace this type of institutional knowledge. I think @Alma is right here and the Times will just bleed this sucker out until there's no one left and they can euthanize it.

Tim was basically the first writer in the entire operation.

It's not going to unravel immediately - like Grantland basically did - but the big ticket folks are exiting the operation.

I did enjoy the BEST JOB OF MY LIFE description one sentence after he said he was leaving for another writing job.

I was just about to post this. If it's the best job with the best people, why are you leaving

They could’ve not spent the $600 million or whatever and eventually seen it go out of business. Sounds to me like a waste of resources.

Maybe his new job pays better or will be better than The Athletic for other reasons?

Sheer speculation, but given the recent departures, maybe it's not 100% voluntarily.

They could have been given notice that their role would change if their contract renewed, or they'd be welcomed back at a different salary, or any number of scenarios.
