MemphisTigers.Org is on a low boil.

Penny still has Mike Davis as a bench coach. Stansbury recruited most of this team, though.

"Good thing practice doesn’t start in less than 3 weeks."

"There will be a 30 for 30 about Penny’s coaching tenure here one day— plenty of behind the scenes drama. Did Rick ever rejoin the fold after storming out of practice last week"

"The fact that there is staff turnover after last season isn't the story in this case, although the track record is concerning. The real story is why is this happening about 3 weeks from the beginning of practice instead of closer to the end of last season.

The timing of this suggest something else going on in the background that is a bigger deal than just 4 staff members leaving out of nowhere. I hope that I am wrong but I wouldn't be surprised by some type of bad news for the program leaking out over the next month or so."

Memphis has a new AD who is not from the area and views things with an outsider's eye. It look like either there was a rift on the coaching staff and Penny got rid of Stansbury and his allies, that or the new AD told Penny that the dysfunction on the staff had to be fixed. Since Penny knows he is not the source of the problem he fired a bunch of other guys.

There are all kind of wild rumors. MT.Org is a hoot when something happens up there.

Memphis' third incident under Hardaway, and his program is in the middle of four years of NCAA probation.

This ain't gonna end well for Li'l Penny.

There is no other university that can legitimately contend for an at-large bid that would put up with half the dysfunction that constitutes a typical week at the U of M. And this is stretching all the way back to Dana Kirk.

Having a guy who was 1-31 in his last season as a head coach isn't exactly a good thing.

Yeah. UAB was in C-USA with them as well as now being in the AAC. I've seen their fans on message boards for years, and I've observed their board with great amusement and schadenfreude from time to time. This is no more than a 4 on a 10 scale. Most of them are ready to see Penny gone. The gold standard was when Calipari left for Kentucky. The server damn near melted.

I was around the program a lot when he was HC here. He can teach the game, but he can be an absolute head case. When he gets depressed and sulky he's a train wreck. He's a pretty good big man coach though.

The NCAA is toothless. Probation is supposed to mean that further violations compel serious sanctions. Those sanctions never seem to be applied.

Maybe less? From one of those forum threads:

Don't know who or to what extent but this from multiple reliable sources. 3 players were due NIL payments on Sept 1st and they didn't happen. The collective has been being robbed blind. There is no money in it.

Again, I am not sure how it happened or to what amount of money is gone, but I have heard it from 2 different sources that don't even know each other. This is coming to a head - QUICKLY.

    Hoo boy.
