That ruling seems silly. It's a minus-39-yard fumble.

If the ball is snapped over the QB's head, and he kicks it out of bounds, it's not a punt. Being in "punt formation" should go out the window if the ball is never actually handled by the punter.

In that infamously wonderful Arkansas-Tennessee Stoerner fumble game, a ball was snapped over the Arkansas' punter's head with about 2 minutes left. He kicked the ball out of the end zone. Ruling on the field was a safety, but the SEC office said the next day that the punter should have been penalized for illegally batting/kicking the ball.

If you're "punting," it, how can it be an illegal kick?****

****assuming the rules haven't changed, which they very well may have been.

Mile High would know for sure, but I thought "illegal batting" was when you batted a loose ball forward, and that it was legal to bat a loose ball toward your own goal line.

Could be. I've just heard the terms used together so many times --- perhaps incorrectly.

Is batting a ball out of bounds so an opponent can't recover it illegal?

Only if the ball is batted forward, I believe.

Good luck getting into the Dallas location. They only have two or three CFB games each weekend in the dome (like in the video linked here). It's sold out for the next month. But if you want to see Alabama vs. Tennessee there, you can get single seats for $50 each.
