The execs aren't paid by taxpayers.

There shouldn't really be tenure at state schools but, to the extent there is, this is at least a way of addressing things.

Generally, neither are the professors, unless literally all the academic operating budget of a university comes from taxpayer funds.

"Taxpayers pay professors salaries so we can tell 'em what to teach" is a common refrain among those too lazy to actually look at a budget or have a perverse need to score political points with simpletons who either are too lazy to actually look at a budget or in search of confirmation bias.

    So try again.

His argument kind of comes back into focus a little though when you consider how much grant money comes from Uncle Sam.

Still, there is an opportunity cost to tightening the screws so you eliminate every possible free rider, just like draconian tests for public assistance screen out many who should otherwise be eligible. In this case the cost is that many of those who would make the best professors dump that career and go make more money in the private sector.

Then again, I view higher education as a net benefit to society and not an existential threat to my church. So mileage may vary.

ADD: That doesn’t even address the fact that what Florida is setting up is a comically transparent political purge.

Yeah, generally, those who want to fire tenured professors from positions at public universities do so because they're looking at sociology/history/political science professors whose academic work they don't agree with because it goes against their baked-in biases, be they from nuture, ignorance, lack of education, desire for political power, or a combination thereof. It's never engineering/science/etc. professors, unless they're performing stem cell research because ABORTION IS MURDIDILLYURDER!!

Meatball Ron Shrimp Boots DeathSantis performing a political purge? And not even having the common sense to try and hide it? Highly localized in Gainesville?

Oh, they’ll start going after the scientists if given the chance. They’ve just attacked the soft targets — liberal arts — first. Engineering will be safe, though.

Well, they'll need their good Germans to design more efficient camps when Trump's deportation plan starts.

They tried going after the University of Pittsburgh's state funding for the stem cell research but Shapiro wasn't having any of it. Also probably helped that his kid goes to Pitt.

If I had to guess, it was the racist rubes from Cambria and Somerset counties that started that, too.
