I just checked the Ringer website. Both the Simmons podcast and the Press Box podcast have segments on Lowe getting fired. I think a Ringer job offer is imminent for Lowe.

ESPN laying off Zach Lowe right before the NBA season is like benching your best player in the nba Finals

Hasn’t other talent which has been bought out sat on the sidelines because they were still being paid out on their deals? I would assume that he had significant bargaining power when he signed and is still being paid under his contract.

ESPN’s MO seems to be: We’ll let you take another job, if you void the rest of the contract. They bank on high achievers wanting to get right back to work to get themselves out from under the payments.

Did Lowe violate a rule or policy?

I don't know. But Lowe has a podcast that draws pretty good numbers. I don't know if you want to shut that down and then try to restart it in a year or two when your contract expires or you try to keep the brand alive.

He was guilty of having a seven-figure salary while the beancounters were on the prowl.

Depending on what the payments are, I might be willing to let them keep on paying me.

Guess there's no space at ESPN for the corner-3 king of hoops writing.

Picking some nits here b/c I don't think they've broken any real news, but Fox again has writers on FoxSports dot com. Of course, it's Fox so they may lay everyone off in the time it takes to type this post.

SI still breaks its share of news, frequently in golf and Pat Forde on colleges and Olympics. But yes, "sourcing" can still be flaky and some outlets are better than others.
