This may be the only corner of cyberspace where a sane discussion of this is possible, so, here goes ...

Start at San Jose State, where a member of the women's volleyball team has joined a suit challenging the NCAA's position allowing trans athletes to compete. Link is gifted.

Second school forfeits volleyball match to San Jose State in apparent protest against NCAA rules

Since the story linked appeared, the number of universities forfeiting games to San Jose State is up to four: Utah State, Wyoming, Boise State and Southern Utah.

This issue ain't going away, folks.

Colorado State flying in the face of the boycotts. Check out what day it is.

My question to these other schools: why wasn't it a problem the previous two seasons that all of sudden now you have to forfeit matches

Supposedly Wyoming's team voted to play and announced it would on Monday. Then the FreeDumb Caucus that runs the legislature got involved and not-so-subtle threats regarding future funding for the university were made. Then the match was forfeited.

Beyond the two sides of the issue, the only thing I'll say is I don't think I'd get into a foxhole with her teammate, Brooke Slusser.

A few thoughts, as an NCAA volleyball follower, sports fan in general, and interestingly enough a CSU volleyball season ticket holder (and, yeah, looking forward to the match tonight).

As has been brought up, this is her third year of playing for SJSU. She also played a year for Coastal Carolina, reportedly leaving when the state banned trans athletes. It also would seem she has played volleyball as a female since she was at least a sophomore in high school. That's a really long time for this all to all of a sudden be an issue. All of that is also getting very ignored in a good deal of the reporting out there.

She doesn't even lead her team in kills. She is also 88th in the nation. Far from some dominate force. Also, not being widely reported.

Take this for what it is worth, but on another forum I participate on someone who is pretty connected to high-level volleyball said this wasn't really a secret, but also not out. I would imagine at least within the SJSU program, and probably throughout the MW, it was known from the start she is a transwoman.

Wyoming, as also mentioned here, voted to play. Their state government almost certainly made them forfeit. Boise State, who I don't know if they took a vote, also was likely told by the state government they couldn't play. The Idaho governor made a statement. All you need to know. Also likely Utah State falls into that same mix. Most of these teams have played her and SJSU four times at least since she's been on the team. It's a story for another day, but I had the thought about how the latter two fall into the new Pac with such moves.

I have brought it up before here with the Lia Thomas thread, that I bet we have all watched sports and didn't realize a transwoman, or man, was playing. I would pretty much guarantee we have all seen it. There are also likely at least a handful in other parts of the NCAA.

Finally, what a dick move for her teammate to out her. I hope she has the future she deserves, but I am sure she will profit from it.

This is going to be rather coarse but I think it's also worth noting, especially in light of the comparisons to the Algerian and Taiwanese boxers, that transgender and intersex are two very different situations that could be conflated quickly here. For what it's worth, it seems kind of difficult to think one could hide being a trans woman in Division I volleyball for some rather obvious apparel-based reasons.

How the fuck does this Riley Gaines have standing? I didn’t read the suit. I do know that Gaines is a professional Trumpist, but I’m not sure how that gives her standing. Curious.
