One of my best college buds' parents has a place up in the mountains in Erwin, TN. We go there every July for a week, they put us up and we eat/drink/play golf in TN, Bristol VA and NC, including a day in Asheville. It's a glorious time. But hard to see when we'll be able to do it again when reading about all the lost roads -- not that anyone's golf trip means a damn thing, though it is part of the larger picture about when tourism dollars can possibly return. Thankfully the family is OK.

I'm selling out and bailing because in a decade there won't be much left except out of state retirees and pillbillies.

@maumann Don't mean to be a jerk, but can't you and Mrs. Maumann pack up, go pick up your parents and head north?
During Katrina, I got the hell out of dodge.
    Best regards.

Fort Myers has issued a mandatory evacuation order.

Looks like that order is for Fort Myers Beach, and not Fort Myers proper.

Actually, my brother Scott and his wife live within 10 miles of Mom and Dad, on Merritt Island. We just had a family Zoom chat tonight and tried to convince Scott to take everybody north, not toward Fort Lauderdale. In fact, it could be they all wind up here (or with my brother in Blue Ridge). So the Aumann family should be safe.

Mom's looking into hotels and they may wind up as far as Savannah at this point.

And yeah, both Duane and I offered to come down and help, but Scott and his son should be able to manage everybody at this point. Even though my folks are on the barrier island, their townhouse sits several feet above the canal. Even if it were to flood, the water would go toward the property on the opposite side of them.

At 89 years old, there's no way we'd let Mom and Dad stay in the townhouse for even a tropical depression, even if there wasn't a manadatory evacuation of the island. We've been trying to get them to sell and move into independent living because if either fell, the other can't pick them up. And I'd rather them choose the place than me make the decision for them. Right now, it's 1-800-CALL-SCOTT every time there's a problem which is not fair to him. And he travels on business, so he's not always an option, especially if it's urgent.

And thank you for your concern. That's really nice to know.

Snoop Dogg has assumed the function that Kermit the Frog once fulfilled in American society. The go-to mascot when an unrelated entertainment property is completely out of ideas.

When the National Hurricane Center runs out of names, celebrities would be an awesome replacement.

"While Taylor Swift appears to be turning extra-tropical and heading away from the continental United States, Snoop Dogg has a 70 percent chance of becoming a Category 1 hurricane within the next 12-24 hours, according to the NHC."

How about Moscow? No hurricanes there.
