wasn't it standard for the home team to call it in? or if the home team lost, to have the home team coach ask the winning coach if he wants to call it in?

I worked at seven different newspapers during my career, and it was SOP at all of them that home teams were supposed to call in all varsity sports contests. Of course this was back when people cared about newspapers, and also when newspapers at least aspired to get results of the previous night's action in the paper.

As far as the cases when visiting coaches volunteer to call in, that leads to different problems when Visiting Coach decides to call Papers A and C, and forgets or blows off calling Papers B, D and E. Or when Visiting Coach calls in a wildly unbalanced report of the game -- great details on the losing team in a 44-14 final.

At every shop I ever worked, we were the main outlet for our core schools, but we were also in the outer circulation areas for some larger metros, so they wanted the stories in there too. Then also of course there were the statewide major metros and the TV stations.

Yes, and it’s as terrible as you imagine.

In this case, it was a school that had a schedule consisting of games almost all out of our coverage area, so we staffed it for home games only. Down East North Carolina has a lot of empty space between small and middling towns, so I prefered to have my small staff cover games close to the office. If it was an option to handle SouthWest Edgecombe at home or follow Rocky Mount or Northern Nash to Kinston or New Bern, I'd ask the head coach in advance to have someone call.

And this is way back before e-mails and cellphones and electronic communication. We were sending stuff on Trash 80s across 2400 baud modems and still doing paste up.

My cousin had both of his sons play travel hockey. My cousin could afford it and his sons were good enough to play club hockey in college.

I was at a game and somebody broke a stick and I asked my cousin how much that cost. $300. Good lord.

Travel football of course was the last great uncrossable frontier of the club sports juggernaut -- finding facilities the great obstacle.

Presumably no high school with any kind of functional varsity football program would ever allow a travel team to set foot on their field or any other facility.

Every once in a while, talking with some high school sports types over a few beers, I've heard the idea floated of high school age travel team club football being played in the spring and summer.

I would expect the state high school athletic associations would dig in against this like the final battle of Armageddon. Not to mention medical associations -- I can't imagine the idea of adding an additional 12-15 football games a year (for an annual total of 20-25) would be considered a good idea medically.

Turf fields are an income source for high schools.

And yes: A de facto travel feeder program was exactly what was happening with the article I linked above.

Bishop Sycamore on a high school scale -- except the players involved are good.

Of course the whole premise of travel team club sports is that it's an all-star team of sorts; you've got players from several or many different high schools, the kids who are really serious about the sport.

Had a Class 6A playoff game last night. Moved it from Friday to Thursday due to the weather. Most of the entire second half was in a driving rain storm…..and the brief times it didn’t rain, the wind came up. Oh good golly. Just chilled you straight through.
    Rain is fine.
    Wind is fine.
Rain and wind mixed is no bueno.

Went from short sleeves last Saturday to 30 degrees, snow plowed on the sidelines and four layers last night. Most everything getting pushed back to Saturday and Sunday,.
