RIP Bobby Allison

Fearless competitor. RIP.

 

Have to be honest. Thought he had gone to that Victory Lane a LONG time ago. Quit following the turn left sport, so just didn't realize.

 

I know fighting against the misuse of "impact" is a lost cause at this point, but it seems extra inappropriate to describe Allison as "impactful" when you're trying to highlight his successrs and not his crashes.

 

Met Mr. Allison at a Miller Beer grip and grin in June 1988, a few hours later I thought I witnessed his death in turn 2 at Pocono. Amazing he made it 36 years after that, but a tortured 36 it was for him. Thanks for the memories Bobby.

 

Met the gentleman once in the early 2000s. Seemed like a really nice guy. RIP.

 

Could not agree more ... well, with the general statement. I still edit out the continued misuse and abuse of the word "impact."

Thank goodness he had the career he did, so that something like his crash into the catch fence at Talladegs – in this case, the word "impact" is better utilized – that was the catalyst for NASCAR to go for restrictor plates at Daytona and Talladega or the Pocono crash that affected him mentally doesn't outshine either his win total or especially the fact that he was one of the good guys.
