Trans athletes and NCAA

John Oliver's post-election piece briefly touched on it and said that Trump basically spent $134 per trans person in the U.S. on that ad campaign. Just an insane, insane focus. He also added the true threat to girls playing sports is the assistant coach stalking them on social media.

As mentioned, no boy is putting on a wig and makeup to play girls sports because he couldn't hack it (80s movies be damned). This is not a threat to anyone, let alone girls sports or bathrooms or anyone else. I think I have mentioned that my wife cares for trans patients before and we have been discussing this a lot as trans rights supporters but also as sports and volleyball fans, but she is so adamant about how much trans people's bodies change by going through any medical treatment to transition. It isn't an easy process, let alone to have all those advantages playing sports.

Also, with everything that goes on regarding trans people within this country, it's not like they are doing it for the attention.

I think Trump tried, but it was easier to hom to talk about refugees eating pets.

Speaking of SJSU, Mountain West volleyball tournament is next week in Vegas. A suit has been filed by Slusser and a suspended SJSU assistant coach that would bar SJSU from the tournament, claiming sex discrimination.

My favorite response to this topic is to ask the complainer to provide an actual number of transgender athletes competing in female sports.

Inevitably, since there’s very little data on the subject, the complainer tries the “even if it’s just one, it’s one too many,” talking point.

To which I respond that since it’s about “protecting” girls and “saving” women, then we can apply that “even if it’s just one” standard to a whole host of other issues. Such as abortion and guns.

Typically, the complainer resorts to the “but that’s different!” line. To which I then jump on them about how petty they are for caring about this issue when there’s a whole host of more serious issues out there.

The lawsuit filed yesterday is sort of bonkers. There are 12 MW players on it, all from teams that have forfeited. It is basically an attempt to get San Jose State thrown out of the MW tournament. Boise State and Utah State of the forfeiting schools will make the tournament and there is a really good chance one will have to play San Jose State first. So what do they do then? If San Jose State was somehow barred, and I don't see how that will hold up at all, Wyoming would also likely make it and Nevada would have a shot.

I still believe that for at least Wyoming and Boise State and probably Utah State (Nevada's team seemed full in on challenging this), this was a politician decision to forfeit. I bet the players involved in the suit are doing so as much as anything because they are pissed they lost matches. Also, and I don't know how much it matters, but there is a Wyoming volleyball player with two moms. You'd think they would be on the LGBTQ line, but who knows when it comes to competition?

Also in this it is said that the San Jose State coach kept specific players from getting scholarships because of Flemming. Since he wasn't the coach that signed her and wasn't even there her first year at the school, I have a hard time believing that but again, who knows.

There is also an interesting element that hasn't come up much at all, and definitely not in regular media, but it seems it is in the suit that CSU and one of its star players collaborated with at least Flemming to try to hurt Suesser. I am not sure how that is even a possibility in volleyball since the teams are on different sides of the court and don't physically interact, no matter what the talking point about how hard a ball is hit, but it is a pretty serious allegation. Probably light in facts, but I would assume the players at least met causing the stir.

The funny thing about the actual play is San Jose State isn't very good. They are 4-5 in actual MW matches played. But they will be the second or third seed in the tournament. If they get the second seed, they will have a bye and will only have to win two matches to make the NCAA tournament.

On a media sidenote, the Coloradoan has not written a word on this. I find it irresponsible considering CSU was the first team that played San Jose State in conference and now the allegation in the lawsuit.

If just one transwoman is playing sports, it's a travesty. If a few dozen children are killed in their classrooms, that's the price of freedom.

I'd been wondering if there was some scent of retaliation against Slusser. And from what I've read on this thread alone, I think it would be quite possible to injure an opposing player.

While I don't doubt it is possible to injure an opposing player, I don't see how likely it is. At least at this level. These are D-I athletes and know how to take or avoid a shot. A bloody or maybe even broken nose is probably the extent of it, and maybe if they were conspiring for something, that is all they were going for. Not that it wouldn't have been completely obvious if it had happened.

I have watched a lot of college volleyball (it was my first real beat!) and I don't ever think I've seen a player get hurt from an opposing shot. Maybe a knick that took her out of a game for a bit, but nothing serious. Most injuries I've seen have been from the floor.
