Damn. He's had to have been there close to 40 years.

One of my favorite AP follows. Padres, Aztecs, Chargers in the day, America's Cup and X Games-like sports, among other things.

And zero major championships in the city. Except Tiger in the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey but he wasn't the lead on that, of course.

One of the running gags on his Twitter feed was how the Padres never threw a no hitter. So of course both Padres no hitters have been on the road.

I kind of wanted to be Paul Newberry when I grew up. Seems like he had his hand in every aspect of Southern sports. Even when the national AP writers swooped in, he never took a back seat.

(I also wanted to be Mark Long in north Florida, especially after hearing him go on an epic rant at Jags training camp about how the construction crew renovating the stadium had a better view of practice than we ever would.)

Looks like Hank Kurz, the Virginia sports guy, is taking the buyout, too. Will there be anyone left?

Hank is awesome. Helped him out some when I was in Lynchburg covering some Liberty games, and he helped me out immensely as a reference for my current gig.

IIRC, when Dawn Staley found out Iacobelli wasn't going to the Final Four to cover her team, she called AP.

No surprise. Staley feels like Iacobelli has done his job and then some ... the media in the state love her and there seems to be a lot of good reasons why.

Worked down there during a short stint of Pete's long run. Never heard a bad word about him. He'll be missed.

Great journalist. An even greater person. Big loss for AP.
