    [Completely monotone voice]

It looks to me like the market has spoken and those farmers are running farms that are losing propositions. Why should millions of hardworking Americans pay to paper over the losses of these failing businesses? Make the necessary cuts in the business and stop feeding at the teet of the American taxpayer.

    [End of monotone voice]

    Signed,

Every person who works in an industry the rural vote helped trash and undermine and destroy for 40 years.

My empathy, my sympathy is officially gone the fuck out. Sell your farm to a corporate behemoth and stop whining, MAGA.

If the Trump cult wasn't so busy doing this.....

.....they'd realize that Musk ranting about the funding bill makes Trump look like a subordinate simp.

Don’t call it a government shutdown. Call it the “Elon Musk Shutdown”. Repeat it endlessly.

Except, of course that would offend the old men in the diners.

Sometimes I think back to 2008 and my last days working equipment leases as the Bush economy began circling the bowl. The biggest client I ever managed to land got hit with a cash crunch. They had the beginnings of what should have been a profitable quarrying operation but what they didn’t have was liquidity.

They had stuck their necks out on this thing and were growing a little desperate. So we tried to work our contacts with the banks and the account factoring people (think of payday loans for businesses). By that point they were willing to throw everything in the pot to refinance: the retail countertops business they had built up, the company rolling stock, their personal condo in Gulf Shores.

The last guy we tried to work with on their behalf finally talked to them and then sent us an email. I still think of the beginning of it often.

“Met with the Does. Nice people. There is nothing we can do for them.”

I found the link to that story from a college friend who married a cotton farmer (fewer of those left down here than you might imagine). And that’s what I thought about after reading that story.

“Nice people. There is nothing we can do for them.”

I mean, we tried. And not everybody who gets caught up in this has a MAGA hat in the cab of the combine. But we were forcefully told no. So this is the future America chose for itself.

    Actions have consequences.
