First Cup for the Islanders came in 1980. Carter deserves the full 30 days up there for that alone.

Wouldn’t have noticed this if not for an adjusted production schedule at work (we mail our print editions now), but this Thursday, Jan. 9, has been declared a national day of mourning for President Carter. No mail, no government offices open … basically it’s a federal holiday.

Our company is aware of this too but we don't mail on Thursdays.

I don’t know the particulars of how it was phrased but federal employees got the day off when George HW Bush has his funeral.

If the GQP is in charge, when Trump dies they'll close all offices for an entire month of mourning and make federal employees wear black for a year -- if there's even a federal government in operation at that point.

Reagan died during the GWB administration, I'd be astonished if there wasn't an official declaration. I can't remember specifically offhand.

Looking back at the dates, Reagan died in June 2004, within a couple months of when I had my TIA, so I probably wasn't focused too much on outside events. I remember watching some of it on tv, but I don't remember details as to what level of official observances of mourning were in effect.

RIP Pete Yarrow, who hung on long enough to outlive the man who pardoned him.

I know these things have been on the books for years and exactly what is going to happen, but I'm always in awe at the precision, attention to detail for these late president ceremonies. The number of people involved and to bring it all together is truly awe-inspiring.
