I mean that’s why right there and for that reason I get it. But I still side eye it even as that stadium will be sold out and fans will be cheering for days as a result.

Rose won MVP in Chicago. That's pretty much a guaranteed jersey retirement.

The only other MVP I know of who hasn't had their number retired by the team is KG in Minnesota... and that one is kind of complicated.

“The Last Dance” was a good documentary! That’s about it … which proves your point.

I’ll say it again: funny what happens when you hire a professional basketball coach to replace a motivational speaker.

I know these people are competitive and have egos, but I can't understand athletes wanting to leave a place like Miami. If I'm a star athlete on a huge contract there, you're getting me out of that city when you cart my dead body out. That's the only way I'm leaving.

You have at most 15 years to win a title and likely another 40-45 years of your life to live in Miami or other tropical locations. Despite overachievement and two Finals appearances, I haven’t seen Pat Riley put together a championship roster since LeBron left. I wouldn’t trust him to do it at this stage of his career. Instead of tearing it down to the studs, he signed Dion Waiters and Hassan Whiteside to long term contracts, ensuring Miami’s ceiling was Butler and Bam and washed up third legs like Kyle Lowry (An achievement to even get that done, to be fair). He’s never recovered.

I think like a lot of teams, the Heat are doing their best to be competitive without bottoming out or access to a true Top 5 talent. It's just really hard to win a title without one - One superstar player can have such a huge effect in basketball, maybe even more than a franchise QB in the NFL. Butler and Bam aren't that guy, more "good all-star" types, and while Miami can seemingly develop any decent prospect with a pulse into a 3-and-D guy, they haven't had a single digit pick since 2008 (Beasley). In 17 years, Spolestra's only missed the playoffs three times, won twice, and made the finals six times. The Heat have worked the angles the best they can, but sometimes it just doesn't work out.

I give Riles huge credit for winning the 3 titles, with two different iterations of the team, plus two other Finals appearances with another version.

I'd remind people it's not that easy to simply get that star to get you the title. In the last 10 years it's been Curry/LeBron/KD/Kawhi/Jokic/Tatum and that's it. It's not like Riles coulda/woulda/shoulda gotten one of those guys. He's done the best possible job. The fact that MIA can off-load Butler and still have flexibility to remake their roster is pretty amazing. Look at the Wiz or Atl, they are in worse shape and haven't even sniffed the Finals.
