Typing was so nice I took it twice!

The second time around it was called keyboarding, and I thought that meant we would be learning more about computers, which were not quite ubiquitous in the winter of 1993. Turns out it was just typing, but this time no longer on actual typewriters. But it was my last semester of high school and I was looking for a soft landing with my class schedule anyway so I stuck around.

IBM Selectric. Sure beat the manual Sears model we had at home.

Eighth grade here too, due to my handwriting being among the worst in the Western Hemisphere, if not the world.

The class was for juniors and seniors, but my mother pushed the higher-ups for me to be allowed to take it because my handwriting was so poor. I was reluctant because it replaced a daily study hall.

I took the class and managed to pass it in spite of struggling due to hand coordination issues. I also developed a crush on this pretty junior who sat at the desk next to me and was one of the few upperclasspeople willing to talk to a junior high kid. Kinda amusing, to think about it now how I hoped a girl three years older than me would somehow find me date-able.

I didn’t really type that much in high school anyways as using an electric typewriter was a pain in the ass. Once I went to college and got a Brother word processor, my typing skills finally started developing. Working every day in newspapers made my typing skills quite good.

    Eighth grade for me too.

As for handwriting, 20 years of scribbling quotes down ruined mine. I wish it was better.

This was and is all a game to them. They ginned us up and the outcome was the same no matter who ran the country. Whether it was Hope and Change or MAGA, whether it was building a border wall or a post-presidential Netflix deal, the end point was seven companies ruling the world at the end of it all in exchange for personal gain and celebrity. We tore down Roosevelt’s America and were left with TV stars.

That’s … a lot to infer from a still photo.
