2024-25 College Basketball Thread

Wofford always seems to have small white guards with short hair who can shoot the heck out of the 3-ball. They remind me of Pat Conroy in "My Losing Season," except that he couldn't shoot.

I think this has been hit or miss. I have seen non-power teams get in with Q4 losses. Boise State won both the regular season and tourney MW titles in 2022 but had a Q4 loss and got seeded 8. CSU got a 6 that year. The Q4 loss didn't keep Boise from the tournament, it just hurt their seeding, probably by a a couple seed lines.

The committee moves the goal posts all the time, and often for individual teams. That's maddening. Who knows how this year is going to play out with some of these power teams, but a 1-11 Q1 North Carolina record should be considered way worse than VCU's top 35 metrics but one Q4 loss. It will be interesting because looking at it, the only other at-large type team with a Q4 loss is again, Boise. Many have them right on the cut line. I think they have to win on Thursday to stay alive. But with so few out there we will be able to tell this year if it mattered for sure if either needs an at-large.

I do get that the committee can't be trusted and leans toward power teams, but the ones that usually get hurt the most are low majors like UC Irvine or Indiana State last year or a school that just has no meat on its resume but otherwise might be worthy. Right now VCU isn't one of those. Especially with this bubble. If they put all these .500 power teams in and North Carloina and not a VCU, well, then, they definitely tipped their hat.

 

My two cents is that if there is a result on Saturday night or Selection Sunday could change things, they aren't changing shit. The committee isn't changing shit after Saturday afternoon, unless required by an auto bid.

 

This floor design for the Big 12 tournament is an abomination. “XII” in small print repeated all over the floor to make it look like they are playing on a waffle iron.
