Dear dimwit in the publisher's office

Also, I once had a general manager tell a co-worker that the problem with the newsroom is that it is the only department in the building that doesn't bring in money.

Dear dimwit in the publisher's office

I had one of those editors, too. I took care of the problem by having my friends anonymously call in and tell the editor to cover the events that I wanted to cover. They also usually added how good of a job they though I was doing.

    Dear dimwit on the phone

This was eight years ago, but if I remember correctly I called one or two back and it really didn't matter because they just took the opportunity to complain about some other aspect of the sports section. It was easier to let them say their piece and not try to reason with them.

    Dear dimwit on the phone

Very similar story here. I was in a two-school town. On the opening week of football season, Team A played Thursday and Team B played Friday. In Thursday morning's paper, we ran our weekly football preview package with the game times clearly marked in a breakout box and listed in several...

Departing editor rips bosses in disguised column

Maybe if the lead was better, such as "Citizens, you are not getting the true picture of what is going on in City Hall." or something such as that. The readers would care and this would be a better column.

    Your successor

The paper is not your concern any more. Unless he/she asks, keep your mouth shut. It's time to cut the cord and move on.

    When the party's over.....

Are these writing jobs? I would think a lot of them would be prepress and pressroom as many papers are going online only.

Colorado newspaper fires writer after ski resort exec complains

If anyone has a way to contact Berwyn, please PM me. I had a similar situation happen to me and I want to give him my support.

    in-game interviews

The other part to this is it's the TV crew's job to present the story as it unfolds. Their coverage ends shortly after the final whistle/out. The print people tell the story after it has occurred (and I realize that with the Internet and blogs, this isn't so steadfast), so an in-game interview...

    Ethical question

I once did a story on a local off-roader and after the photographer left, the local off-roader tried to slip me $200. I refused it and then told my SE when I got back to the office, so that I couldn't be accused of foul play. I don't think it made a difference to the SE that I passed up the...

Writing 'free' for our newspaper... what the heck?!?

I see the argument for work only 40 hours a week, all that's all well and good on paper. However, my problem was that I put my byline on my stories and that forced me to put in every scrap of energy I could to write the best story I could. Only once in eight years did I "phone in a story"...

Sports writer/designer opening in Danville, Va.

I don't know if Drew was the SE back in 2003, but the SE back then used me and disguarded me like a box of tissues. Since then I've always been weary of Danville Register and Bee ads There was an opening in the sports department, I sent in my resume. They then went as far as giving me a phone...

Sports reporter, Mohave Valley (AZ) Daily News

I used to work at the Daily News. It has had its problems in the past with a absentee sports editor, but he is not around any more. Wayne Agner, who took over as ME in 2005, is working hard to turn this paper around. Yes, it is in the middle of the desert, but it's a good place for someone to...

    Situation...

To get back on topic, I've done something similar in the past. I was at a 22K and moved to an 8K to be its sports editor. The problem with making such a move is that, although there's a nifty new title involved, all most hiring editors see is that you currently work for a crappy 8K paper. Also...

    JV coverage

I've been in the same boat. My ME forced me to do a write up on any JV/junior high team that called in. Only one coach called in on a regular basis. So, of course, I got the calls saying that I favored that one team.
