Job Title: Managing Editor
Department: Internet Communications
Reports To: Director, Internet Communications
Basic Function: Manage and produce daily editorial content for USAHockey.com.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Manage all materials posted on www.usahockey.com, maintaining a high-quality editorial product aligned with the goals and objectives of USA Hockey, the National Governing Body for hockey in the United States, and a representative to the United States Olympic Committee, and the International Ice Hockey Federation.

Develop original content including researching and writing features, working closely with the USA Hockey Media & Public Relations department. Develop story ideas in conjunction with a team of free-lance writers, having final decision-making authority over editing and posting written products, assigning stories, and anticipating newsworthy events.

Produce front page layout and interior web pages working with a dedicated web-publishing tool utilizing small amounts of HTML coding, to post text files, photos, logos and other graphics, audio and video files.

Develop and maintain components of the Web site that inform, educate and entertain all USA Hockey membership constituencies, including, but not limited to: men’s and women’s Olympic teams, junior league hockey, youth hockey, inline hockey, international and professional hockey, girls’/women’s hockey, adult hockey, coaches, officials, parents, volunteers, college hockey, and others.

Schedule and implement special content and programming concepts for the site, including feature stories, news flashes, chat sessions, bulletin boards, contests/promotions, and audio/video segments.

Direct the coverage of all USA Hockey and USA Hockey InLine events, including schedules, rosters, results, news releases, statistics, player bios, photography and real-time scoring.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in interactive media, communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, computer science, or a related field.

Minimum of three years full-time, professional experience in interactive media/electronic publishing/online editing. Strong candidates will have experience in a sports organization or media department.

Strong knowledge of various competitive levels of ice and inline hockey is desired.

Proven writing and editing skills. Experience on a news desk or other news environment preferred.

Excellent computer proficiency, including some HTML and web publishing.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Willingness to travel as necessary.

anyone know what the ballpark for pay for this job is?

 

not sure on pay, but Colorado Springs is beautiful.

 

Worked as a freelancer for USAH for several years. Solid folks.

 

I can agree with that ... love it there and am looking forward to my next visit in a few weeks.

nah, the springs is pretty affordable, all things considered

 

The area is pretty average now, in a lot of ways -- pay, housing, other costs -- and I hear it's something of a test market for, well, marketers. When the sun is out, which is often even in the winter, it looks beautiful. East-west traffic is becoming a problem (there are no freeways).

 

I applied for this job when it was open about 2-4 years ago (can't remember exactly when), so those applying might want to inquire what became of the person who eventually got the job (moved up in the company or moved on).
